Artistic Styles

Some of the artistic styles that are commonly used in video games are cel-shading. Cel-shading is a type of non-photorealistic rendering which means that it uses more expressive styles. This usually gives it an animation feel. The sorts of games that incorporate this style are usually either comic book games like the Spiderman games or other games that are trying to be more humorous like Borderlands and Team Fortress. Other games use it because it mimics hand-draw animation which might add to the games feel. The effect that cel-shading gives is visible in the picture to the right.

Another style that is prominent in the games industry is steam punk/cyberpunk which normally includes a Victorian England setting but with advanced technology which may be alternate timelines or other plot devices. Victorian styles are normally prominent and normally have technology that might have been thought of by people of the time. An example of this would be a futuristic gun that still had the shape and metal of an old western revolver. Some of the games that contain a steampunk style are game from the Final Fantasy series which  contain airships that look like basic wooden ships but with propellers and the ability to fly and generators that run from a never ending power source. In Final Fantasy  they have suits powered by magic that have the old industrial metal and steam. they have various equipment that is extremely advanced for the time that they are supposed to be living in, examples of theese are powered fighting suits, transporatation devices and even vehichles that transform.
